I have been playing on this shard for over a year and like many other games, see people come and go. So I thought I would start off a "helpful tips" post to maybe help some new players to this old but great game, and maybe help out a few veterans getting back into the swing of things. I may even learn a thing or two from someone else s post or reply.
I am NOT a UO gaming expert, I just offer helpful advice that may help you in your travels here, most players I have met here are just as friendly and helpful, and if you need a hand or have a question, if I can help or answer I will, just ask or PM me in game.
Now bare with me as I'm not going to chronicle how I played, and tell you to clone me, however this game has the same pieces for everyone, and there are many pieces and directions you can go.
You hopefully have read the wiki page, darkness-once-forsaken.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
Next, cruise the forums for hints and tips, let us not forget that this is an old game, lots of custom shards and players that have played, and created characters and items in this game have happily shared some of this with the world. You can find tons of sites with tips and hints on or about UO(Ultima Online).
I will also go with the assumption that you can or have created a character on DoF.
I believe that you can make 6-7 characters on one account, remember that. Each new toon you make gets all the same starting gear and supplies, even though you can have ALL skills on one character, I still find it beneficial to have more than one. We have the use of Soulstones here, if you're not sure what these are, Google, but it's nothing you need worry about at the moment.
I will end my first post with, What should I do to start? Why start with a Ranger?
I like the Ranger to start for the simple reason...taming.
Taming allows you to have a companion to fight by your side, making your start a little easier. I also found it fun to explore the lands, finding all the pets I could tame, train. This of course was a little easier as I have played this game for a long time. Taming, like every other skill in UO needs to be learned how it can be used for you. Magery, sword fighting, tailoring etc, can all be looked up on Google.
While I am mentioning Google and skills, you will find pages about macroing, if you don't know what this is, you should, it is very useful on any UO shard. It raises certain skills, with those skills you become a better player.
We have a training city, Forsaken City, you can train many things here safely and as long as you need. I suggest that you make sure you get at least 1 fighting skill(mace, archery, swords, fencing) with parry and healing well under way before adventuring to far. There are Ogres that you can train fighting on, even training gear you can wear so you don't damage the items you have found or started with. A veteran of the game could most likely do fine right out of the gate, just need to raise a couple skills and set a few macros and you could be doing the Noobie Champ Spawn, around 200k gold if you learn to clear you trash after all kills([cl).
Explore, can't find anything by sitting in town. You are given a Yellow and Red travel book, check those out.
Yes you will die, and most likely many, many, many, many times. We have item insurance for the things you find and want to keep along the way. Just remember that you need to save gold and have it in the bank to cover this insurance.
Just starting out, I suggest Trammel dungeons, even most places in Ilishnar. If you find it easy, good, you're in a good spot. Gain some skill and gold and find another spot. Eventually you will outgrow many spots then you will start to loot all the spots I go to.
Covetus, Shame, Despise and Destard should be your starting dungeons. You will find, crafting recipes, gear, gold and experience with your new toon.
There are no PKs here(player killers) so it's just you and the monsters, and there is insurance, resurrection stones, a resurrection command in game(read Wiki), Corpse Stones, Silver Saplings(TerMur) and plain old yell for help via public chat ([c). Many ways to save your things you worked hard to get and get back to life.
This is where I leave you for my first post, I will add a few more things that may help a few people or point them in the right direction, and hopefully it grows with tips that helped others when they started out here.
Read The Wiki page, it does get updated and has information you may find very useful. This should get you started while you wait to place your first house, then you will have a home base to explore and bring back and store/display your bounty.
If you have a question and I can answer it, I will.
